The locals will now begin chasing away each cat from one location to the next. This bar is directly next to a busy road and many cats are hit by cars when they are forced away from their “territory”.

“He is not even 6 months old and lives in the bushes with another female kitten, probably from the same litter. They wait each day for food and would have no chance otherwise. Last month, he was terrified and would run into the bushes and hide with the food we provided him. Today, he allowed us to pet him for the first time. We are sooo happy at his progress and hope that we can save his life so that he can live to see his first birthday. His sister is still too scared and will not come anywhere near us. We hope to be able to rehome them together.” - Sara

PRAYER OF A STRAY CAT

Please send me somebody who’ll care,
I’m tired of running, I’m sick with despair.
My body is aching, it’s so racked with pain,
And I pray as I run in the rain,
That someone will love me and give me a home,
A warm cozy bed to call my own.
I’ve been ignored and chased away,
To rummage in garbage and live as a stray.
Now I’m tired, hungry and cold,
And I’m so afraid that I’ll never grow old.
They’ve chased me with sticks and hit me with stones,
While I run in the streets just looking for bones.
I’m not really bad, please help if you can,
For I have become just a “victim of man!”

Sara’s updates – An unexpected emergency

The beautiful mother who is only a kitten herself and her only surviving baby.

“Shortly after we started the daily feeding walk, we found out that a dog had been badly hit by a car earlier in the day but was still alive. The person who informed us of the situation was sure that the dog had died by the time he spoke to us but Manuela and I decided to go to the location and see for ourselves.

On the way to the area, we walked by the territory of a beautiful kitten who we had not seen for a few days and decided to find out from the local man in the area whether or not they had seen her recently. The man informed us that she had been bit by a dog yesterday and given birth shortly after to 7 kittens and only 1 had survived.

The man had left the dead kittens next to the mother and the 1 surviving kitten was barely alive because the mother was not accepting her. She also had a deep infected wound from the dog bite on the inside of her leg.

We then had to convince the man to allow us to take the mother and her only kitten to the hospital. He did not even offer to drive us and we had to catch a bus to the hospital which is in another city. The first bus did not stop for us because the driver did not want any cats on his bus and on the second bus, everyone that was sitting near us changed seats so that they would be further away from the cats.

This was such an unexpected emergency and we spent over 7 hours trying to help this poor cat who would have had no chance if we did not stop by her territory at the perfect moment. :( It is really by chance which cat gets the opportunity to have a new life and which cat is stuck on the streets fighting for his or her life each day. If only the locals helped with the animals of their own country, more lives could be saved.

She had to be sedated in order for her wound to be properly cleaned and she will have to stay at the hospital for several days while she recovers. The veterinarian told us that if she was not brought in to the hospital, she would not have survived. He suspects that she gave birth prematurely due to the stress and shock of the dog bite because 1 of her kittens was not properly formed. The surviving kitten is extremely tiny and the next 48 hours of her life are critical for her survival.” - Sara

“Today we extended the usual walk in search of our little black girl who escaped last month. We came across several cats who we had never seen before. We saw this sad boy laying next to a trash bin and thought he had passed away. He was terrified of us and immediately ran when we tried to feed him. We were able to follow him and put food down near him and made sure that he ate before we had to walk away. It is so sad to think of all the dogs and cats that we do not see and therefore are not able to feed each day.” - Sara

Sara' updates - Urgent part 2

“This lovely little girl now named Madonna has spent her entire life on the streets. She is just over a year old according to the veterinarian and is one of the forgotten cats of Avsallar who was left to starve to death once the hotels in the area closed down after the tourist season had ended. She lived directly next to a busy highway where many cats are regularly hit by cars and left to die. Manuela had been feeding her for months and one day, we went to her small territory to feed her and noticed that the hotel staff had started construction in her area. We did not see her for several days and began to worry that she had been “removed”. We continued to look for her each day and she suddenly appeared near her territory 4 days later, hungry as ever. We knew at that point that if we left her on the streets, she would not survive.

During her examination with the veterinarian, he noticed that she appears to have had an old injury on her tail that caused her skin to be torn off. It has since scarred over but she is still missing fur on the area. It is unknown whether she was hit by a car or abused by locals.

She is now fixed, micro-chipped, vaccinated and has tested negative for both FIV and Leukemia. Madonna needs a loving home where she can feel safe and begin to trust people again.
She will fly to Vancouver with me on May 3rd as we have raised enough funds to cover her expenses but she is still in need of a loving forever home!!” - Sara

Although she is physically disabled and very poor, she still tries her best to provide for this street cat who recently gave birth to 4 kittens. “We learned today that one of the cats from this group had been hit by a car and died 2 days ago. He was one of Manuela’s favorite cats and would follow her each day, waiting for food. Originally, there were 13 cats in this territory and today we only counted 6. The hotel has reopened as of last week and there are now many cars and people who put the lives of these cats at risk each day.
The black cat in this picture was missing fur all of his body and had some wounds. We are not sure what has happened to him. He is so friendly and Diny Goossens loved him as well.

What a day….most unexpectedly I saw THE dear tiger cat again who was meantime removed from this one Hotel while Diny was still here. She hided about 100 meters far away the Hotel fense outside the Hotel under a bush and cried (as so hungry) when I came by. My eyes were filling up with tears. I believe that the boss of that Hotel might have droven her a couple of kilometres farther 4 days ago and she, smart enough, managed to find the way back.. But she, who used to be very friendly, suddenly was/is real caucious. However, I did not hesitate for just a moment and grabbed her to put her into my carryon cat bag. She was biting me real badly (got a pic of my bloddy hand…) but, even though it hurts a lot since, I did not care as all I wanted, was to bring her into safety. …Now she is indoors and …what a hard decision…Sara and I might have no choice but to take one of the 5 planned Canada cats off the list (4 are already in safety) to give HER the 5th ticket?? Oh well, she is pregnant too.. I will have her neutered this week then also. If someone falls in love with her photo and means it serious with a possible adoption, then please, contact me asap as I now feel so bad that one other cat who could have gone to Canada, will have to stay behind…” - Manuela

“This is most crazy but most sadly a true story: this after noon I walked by THE apartment complex where the white momma used to live along many other cats I regularly feed..THIS apartment complex where this Turkish man broke down in tears the other week, showing me photos of his cat on his cell phone by saying that the owner of this apartment complex would have removed all cats. However, an old German couple came out of this apartment complex; I never saw them before but started a conversation. BOTH, most reliable, CONFIRMED that ALL cats from this apartment complex are gone for good, the white momma too. They told me that another German woman saw a box with cats from there already a months ago under the window of the apartment complex owner and set them all free again but shortly after this evil person re-collected everyone and everyone was gone for good…. This old couple heard that this bastard drove all the cats (about 12 were there) and a 7 months old Shepperd mix dog into the mountains and threw all those animals into a canyon for them to NEVER be able to make it back but to cruelly die!!! 

They got this info from their gardener. The apartment complex is called “Az Öz Sitesi” here in Avsallar! With tears in my eyes and incredibly shattered I asked this old couple if they could get me the name and phone number of this most perverted bastard but they said that its a whole clan, he and a group of similar bastards, who run this apartment complex and who did it together. So the old couple confirmed that all cats are dead, everyone there knows it but what to do when there is no proof in pictures… I am posting a photo from 2 of those wonderful cats I used to care about for so long, until this most unbelievable thing happened lately.” - Manuela

Manuela updates – Saw the little escape…

“I saw the poor cat again who escaped on the way to the vet out of her crate 4 weeks ago. Again she was NOT in her old territory but on the other side of the most busy highway, about 300 Yards far away from her old territory. She was still too shy to be able to catch her like when I saw her 2 weeks ago after the escape but I am really sure its her due to the white spot on her chest. She was sooo hungry. I am hoping with all my heart to see this one again once Sara is back here on Tuesday and even more to be able to catch her then. Sara, do you think its her as I do? Looking so much forward to your return to Avsallar this Tuesday!!” - Manuela

Manuela updates – Standing in the middle of the highway!

“When I returned from the vet and got off the bus, I felt so shocked as THIS beautiful, most friendly calico stood in the middle of the highway! I used the 10 seconds before the next car approached to get her of this most busy street. I carried her to my place; so sad, she is pregnant also. : ( I will have her neutered on Monday and she will be number 5 on the lucky 5 list to go to New York. I will introduce all 5 once more separately over the next couple of days - Manuela

Manuela updates – Only 7 months old and she is pregnant already

 “I just returned from bringing her to my veterinarian. Only 7 months old, she is pregnant already has are 99% of the female cats here and in such a dangerous spot in town. She got neutered an hour ago and will be remaining under the care of my vet until her take off as one of  THE LUCKY 5 to go to New York in 9 days time. I am very glad about that my vet is keeping her as I have got no space here… - Manuela
